American Home Shield Plans

American Home Shield offers three home warranty plans: ShieldSilver, ShieldGold and ShieldPlatinum. ShieldSilver covers your home systems exclusively, while ShieldGold and ShieldPlatinum cover a combination of built-in systems and home appliances. You can see what each plan covers in the sections below.

ShieldSilver

ShieldSilver covers your home’s built-in systems. Compared to other service providers, AHS’ systems-only plan covers more items than the standard basic plan offered elsewhere in the industry. AHS’ systems coverage includes items such as toilets, faucets, valves, doorbells and chimes.

Plan coverage highlights:

  • Covers 14 major systems, including air conditioning and heating units
  • Doesn’t stipulate a specific coverage limit on built-in systems

ShieldGold

ShieldGold expands on the coverage of ShieldSilver by covering nine appliances. This plan has a $3,000 coverage limit per appliance, which is higher than many competitors in the industry.

Plan coverage highlights:

  • Covers everything in the ShieldSilver plan
  • Covers nine essential appliances, including refrigerators, cold water dispensers and laundry machines
  • Appliances are covered up to $3,000 per appliance

ShieldPlatinum

ShieldPlatinum covers a total of 24 built-in systems and appliances. With this plan, your coverage cap is raised to $6,000 per appliance. In addition to all the items in the two earlier plans, ShieldPlatinum is the only base plan that includes roof-leak protection, code upgrades and HVAC maintenance.

Plan coverage highlights:

  • Covers everything in the ShieldGold plan
  • Covers up to $6,000 per appliance
  • Covers up to $1,500 for roof-leak damage
  • Covers code violations, crane costs and debris removal
  • Additional benefits, such as a discounted annual HVAC tune-up and unlimited refrigerant

American Home Shield offers five additional coverage options:

  • Electronics Protection Plan
  • Pool or spa
  • Guest unit up to 750 square feet

How Much Does American Home Shield Cost?

After researching almost 40 companies, we calculated that the average monthly fee in the home warranty industry falls between $39 and $64. Our quote for a single-family home in Memphis, Tenn., was between $25 and $70 per month for an AHS plan, which is aligned with the industry average.

You can raise or lower your monthly fee by selecting a $75, $100 or $125 service call fee. The service call fee essentially acts as a deductible and is the amount you pay at the time of service before your coverage applies. The service call fee may also be referred to as the trade service call fee. The general rule is the higher your service call fee, the lower your monthly calls fees.

American Home Shield Reviews

American Home Shield covers nearly 2 million American homeowners, according to its website. As such, we had an abundance of information to sort through, including more than 18,000 customer reviews and several hours of customer service calls. Our research process included listening to real-life customer service experiences and identifying the main pain points of AHS’ clientele.

We noted that customers were pleased with the knowledge and professionalism displayed by their service providers but didn’t know what to expect if a claim was filed outside of regular business hours. This confusion led to some customers being disappointed about waiting for a service provider to reach out.

We pulled a selection of reviews from BestCompany that provide a balanced view of American Home Shield’s strengths and weaknesses.

“I had another company I used to service my HVAC. I had problems with my heat pump. They told me nothing could be done at this time, and it had to be replaced.  [American] Home Shield sent out their HVAC people, and they fixed the problem. I am extremely happy.”  — Hakim, 2022

“My technician was very professional and courteous as was promised by AHS. [When] I called AHS, they got me a tech in a matter of less than a day. my job was done very quickly, plus clean up. Every time I’ve used them I have been left very satisfied.” — Barbara Sago, 2022

“I recently renewed my contract and purchased the ShieldPlatinum [plan]. The agent stated that EVERYTHING in my home was covered by this plan. I had two new repairs, one to fix the washer, the other was to fix the jacuzzi tub in the master bath. Washer [was] fixed with no issue, good job. [The] jacuzzi tub was not covered under the plan, and that was not resolved until the repair person showed up at my home and said I cannot fix this. They want me to pay the co-pay for the repair person, which I am not willing to do, and I am still in the process of chasing down that refund. Today is ten business days and still not received. I will cancel my contract if this is not resolved and I have been a customer for five years. My other HUGE point of frustration is the call center. I find it extremely difficult to communicate with any of their employees.” — Doug Billingsly, 2022

“The current practice of only scheduling only business days is problematic. I have a water pipe leak that occurred Saturday morning, and I’m not able to reach a plumber. Previously I had no heat and had to wait about 5-6 days for a repair, and it was very cold. The coverage is excellent, and I appreciate the insurance but the severity of the issue to be repaired should be taken into account.” — Maryalice E. Khan, 2022
